Transforming Academic Seminar: From Study Hall to Launchpad for Student Success

Too often, the Academic Seminar—sometimes called the Resource Room—is misunderstood. In some schools, it becomes a glorified study hall. In others, it’s treated as a catch-up block for missing work. But when used with purpose, this space has the potential to transform the lives of students with disabilities (SWDs).

As I share in my book, Teaching Academic Seminar with Purpose, Academic Seminar should not be an afterthought. Instead, it should serve as a strategic environment where individualized instruction, executive functioning support, and goal-driven planning come together to help students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

What Makes an Effective Academic Seminar?

A purposeful seminar is built on structure and intentionality. Research shows that when SWDs are given consistent routines and explicit skill-building opportunities, their confidence and independence increase (Murawski & Spencer, 2019). In my own classroom, this shift turned chaos into a system of growth.

An effective seminar includes:

  • Targeted support tied directly to IEP goals.
  • Executive functioning instruction (organization, time management, self-regulation).
  • Progress monitoring that holds students accountable and shows them growth in real time.
  • Remediation and reteaching to close achievement gaps.
  • Self-advocacy and transition planning that prepare students for life beyond school.

A Quick Win for Educators

You don’t need to overhaul your schedule to start strong. Try beginning your next seminar with a 3-minute “Purpose Pitch.”

Explain to students how this period will help them achieve their goals—whether that’s organizing a binder, completing a math assignment, or practicing self-advocacy. Framing the session this way builds buy-in, shifts mindsets, and transforms the period from a vague obligation into a meaningful opportunity.

Why This Matters

Every student deserves more than a holding period. They deserve a structured, supportive space where their strengths are celebrated, and their challenges are addressed with intention. When Academic Seminar is built with purpose, it becomes more than a class period. It becomes a launchpad for confidence, independence, and long-term success.

Reflection for Leaders and Educators

  • How is your school currently using Academic Seminar or Resource Room?
  • What systems could you put in place tomorrow to add more structure and intentionality?
  • How are you equipping students with the executive functioning skills they need for success beyond your classroom?
